Savannah has a humid subtropical climate. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport show about 48 inches of rain a year, with June, July and August the wettest months, and roughly 80 days a year at or above 90 °F. July afternoons average 92.3 °F. Heat and summer rain mean weekly mowing in the warm months and fungus after wet spells.
Most local yards sit on sandy, acidic Lower Coastal Plain soils, and much of Chatham County is poorly drained with a seasonal high water table. A soil test is the honest first step before lime or fertilizer; centipede prefers acidic soil and usually should not be limed.
Then there are the trees. Moss-draped live oaks shade many older neighborhoods, which affects which grass grows and how often limbs need clearing. Centipede and St. Augustine are the familiar lawns here, with zoysia and bermuda in sunnier yards. Read our guide to the best grass for Savannah lawns.
City of Savannah water customers: no outdoor irrigation from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and no watering on Fridays. Even-numbered addresses water Monday, Wednesday and Saturday; odd-numbered addresses water Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The year-round schedule followed EPD's 2006 “Red Zone” designation over saltwater intrusion into the Floridan Aquifer. Questions: 912-651-2221.
Georgia's statewide rule allows outdoor watering only between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m., with exemptions for new sod and plants during installation and for 30 days after, drip or soaker hoses, and hand watering with an auto-shutoff nozzle. As of our last check, EPD declared a statewide Drought Response Level 1 on April 27, 2026; check epd.georgia.gov for the current level. Our Savannah watering schedule guide covers the details, and an irrigation repair visit can set a controller to your days.
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and searches for tree service in Savannah peak from July through October. Have trees near the house inspected and deadwood removed before the August–October peak. See our hurricane-season tree prep guide.
